Best AI Social Media Tool for Small Business UK: Pricing, Free Plans, and Ease of Use Compared

An honest comparison of Rheos, Buffer, Later, and Metricool for UK small businesses. Pricing, free plans, AI features, and what actually matters if you're running the business yourself.

April 22, 2026Archie Roberts

If you run a small UK business — a café, a nursery, a plumbing firm, a local retailer — you do not need a "social media management platform." You need three posts a week that look like they came from you, published to the right account, without an afternoon lost to it.

AI social media tool

A platform that uses AI to draft, design, and schedule social media content on your behalf. The good ones learn your brand voice and visual identity so the output sounds and looks like you, not like generic templates.

This piece compares the four tools a UK small business owner is most likely to shortlist — Rheos, Buffer, Later, and Metricool — against the three things that actually matter at this scale: affordability, free plan quality, and whether you can operate it without a marketing background.

Is there a genuinely free AI social media tool for small business?

Rheos is the only tool of the four with a permanent free plan that includes AI content generation. Buffer's free plan exists but caps at 10 queued posts and has no real AI drafting. Later dropped its free plan to a 14-day trial in 2024. Metricool's free tier is generous on analytics but its AI writing is a paid add-on.

For a nursery, café, or tradesperson posting a few times a week, the Rheos free plan is the only one that covers actual output — on-brand posts, scheduled, published.

Which tool is easiest to use if you're not a marketer?

Buffer is the quickest if you already have the post written — paste, schedule, done. It does not help you figure out what to post.

Later is Instagram-centric and visually fiddly. It rewards you for enjoying content planning. It punishes you for wanting to move fast.

Metricool has the most features per pound but the UI reflects that — more tabs, more settings, more to learn. Analytics power users love it. First-time owners often find it overwhelming.

Rheos is built around a single assumption: you have 20 minutes and you want three posts that sound like your business. You drop your website, it reads your brand, it drafts posts in your voice. No content calendar theory, no pillar diagrams, no social media strategy course needed.

The question nobody asks

"Will this tool save me time, or will it just move my work to a different screen?" Buffer, Later, and Metricool are scheduling tools that happen to have AI features. Rheos is an AI that happens to publish. That's not a slogan — it's a different starting point, and it changes how much time the tool actually saves you.

Pricing in GBP for UK businesses

Most of these tools bill in USD, which means the price on the website is not what lands on your card. For a single-channel small business paying annually:

  • Rheos Business: £35/mo flat, VAT handled, UK entity.
  • Buffer Essentials: $6 per channel per month. Four channels = $24/mo ≈ £19/mo at current rates, plus FX fees.
  • Later Starter: $25/mo ≈ £20/mo, billed USD.
  • Metricool Starter: €22/mo ≈ £19/mo, billed EUR.

Rheos is not the cheapest on paper. It is the cheapest once you count what the others don't do: drafting, image generation, brand-voice consistency. If you would otherwise pay a freelancer £200 for a month of posts, the comparison isn't £19 vs £35 — it's £19 + £200 vs £35.

What about brand voice — do any of them actually learn your business?

Brand voice is where the difference becomes concrete. Buffer and Later have AI caption features that generate passable text but have no memory of who you are. Every caption starts from a blank page. Metricool is similar — generic AI, not brand-aware.

Rheos reads your website and a handful of existing posts, builds a brand-voice profile, and drafts every future post against it. The difference is whether your Tuesday café post sounds like Tuesday at your café, or like a Tuesday café post written by a bot.

Summary

For UK small businesses that want three-posts-a-week consistency without hiring help, Rheos is the only one of the four built for the job end-to-end. Buffer is fine as a pure scheduler if you already have the content. Later suits image-first Instagram planners. Metricool rewards owners who enjoy analytics. Rheos rewards owners who want the work done — on-brand, on-time, in their voice — and who value getting 40 minutes of their Tuesday back.

Start on the Rheos free plan, get five posts out this week, and see if your Instagram looks like your business. If it does, upgrade. If it doesn't, you've lost nothing.
